AMA-SX: 2011 Atlanta Results

Reed-Stewart rivalry resumes
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Feb. 28, 2011
Ryan Villopoto emerged with his third win of the season after a wild finish in the Atlanta round of the 2011 AMA Supercross Championship.

An audience of 69,517 fans in the Georgia Dome saw perhaps the most dramatic race of the season as TwoTwo Motorsports Chad Reed and San Manuel Yamaha s James Stewart added another chapter to their long rivalry. The two riders battled each other throughout the race with Reed leading most of the race.

Things came to a head as they entered the whoops soon after Stewart gained the lead. Reed tried a pass on the inside and the two riders made contact, both falling to the dirt. That allowed Monster Energy Kawasaki s Villopoto to move ahead to take the win.

Sometimes its not about being the fastest. Youve got to be smart too, said Villopoto. I figured (Stewart and Reed) would do that, but not with a lap-and-a-half left. We still have a lot of racing though. Ill just go back home and keep my program going and take it one race at a time.

James Stewart led going into the final lap but a pair of collisions with Chad Reed dropped him down to fourth and off the podium.

Stewart and Reed were able to remount and the two again made contact on the final turn, this time letting Rockstar Makita Suzuki s Ryan Dungey to move into second place. Reed and Stewart continued their battle for the final podium position with Reed squeezing ahead by 0.105 seconds.

Ryan Dungey benefited from the second of two final-lap collisions between James Stewart and Chad Reed.

James put a hard pass on me earlier in the race, so I just put one right back on him, says Reed. Im just happy to be up there racing for podiums and challenging for the lead.

With the win, Villopoto extends his lead in the championship standings with a 171-161 advantage over Stewart. Reed moves past American Honda s Trey Canard to sit third with 150 points. Canard still maintains a 146-145 edge over Dungey but all five racers are still in the title picture.

The 2011 AMA Supercross Championship continues March 5 at Daytona International Speedway during Bike Week.
