AMA-SX: 2010 San Diego Results

Rain showers created slippery conditions in Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Calif., with Dungey an unfortunate victim. The Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider hit a slick spot in the first corner and crashed, taking down several other racers.

Monster Energy Kawasaki s Nick Wey, riding for the injured Chad Reed, took the holeshot followed by a group of riders including San Manuel Yamaha s Josh Hill, Valli Motorsports Yamahas Ivan Tedesco and Honda Red Bull riders Millsaps and Andrew Short. Wey led for the opening two laps before Millsaps took control in the third. Millsaps went on to lead the rest of the 20-lap race for the win.

Yeah it was a good night for me, says Millsaps. I came out on top. American Honda is the best crew in world. The tack was slick. You had to just be smooth, consistent and make no mistakes and thats what I did. It was such an amazing race and I cant explain how good it feels.

Right behind Millsaps for most of the race was his teammate Short, giving hopes for a one-two finish for Honda. Those hopes died however when Short crashed on lap 18. That opened the way for Hill to take second with Tedesco behind him in third.

I felt really good out there but I spent way too much time trying to pass Ivan (Tedesco) and I think that let Davi (Millsaps) get away a bit too far for the time I had left, says Hill.

Hills fourth consecutive podium result pushed him to within four points of Dungey in the overall standings. Dungey damaged the radiator on his Suzuki RMZ450 in the first-corner crash and leaked coolant for the rest of the race. A second crash later in the first lap set him back even more. Despite the two crashes, Dungey still managed to finish sixth, with steam coming from his bike after riding half the race without any coolant.

That was a difficult race, says Dungey. I was feeling good and was excited for the Main, but after I fell down it was a lot of work to get towards the front. Its a long season though and we did a good job minimizing the damage. Its good to leave San Diego with the points lead still in hand and I look forward to Anaheim Three.

The 2010 AMA Supercross season continues Feb. 13 at Angel Stadium for the third and final Anaheim, Calif., round. Dungey holds a 105-101lead in the standings, but with four different winners in five races, the championship picture remains wide open.
