Villopoto chips away at lead but time running out
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Mar. 29, 2010
Ryan Villopoto earned his sixth win of the season, but he may have to win the remaining five races to unseat Ryan Dungey from the AMA Supercross championship lead.

Racing before a crowd of 38,321 at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla., Villopoto led every lap for the win, but a second place finish by Dungey cut the lead by only three points. Villopoto leads all riders with six wins in 12 races but Dungeys consistency (hes missed the podium only three times, and has finished no lower than sixth) gives him a 261-240 lead.

Valli Motorsports Rockstar Yamaha s Ivan Tedeso took the holeshot in the Jacksonville main event, followed by Monster Energy Kawasaki s Villopoto and Geico Powersports Honda s Kevin Windham. Tedescos lead didnt last long as Villopoto passed him shortly after the first corner and was unchallenged the rest of the way.

Ryan Dungey's consistency may earn him the 2010 AMA Supercross Championship.

Meanwhile, Rockstar Makita Suzuki s Dungey began his charge after finishing the first lap in fifth place. First to get passed was San Manuel Yamahas Josh Hill who continues to race injured. A couple of laps later, Dungey moved past Tedesco into third place. Dungey then began to fight for second with Windham, finally moving ahead on lap 13. Dungey would finish second while a final-lap surge by Honda Red Bull Racings Trey Canard pushed him past Windham for third by 0.142 seconds.

The 2010 AMA Supercross Championship continues April 10 at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas. As fast as Villopoto has been, winning the final five races will not be enough if Dungey maintains his level of consistency.
