AMA-SX: 2010 Daytona Results

Racing on the Ricky Carmichael-designed track on the Daytona International Speedway tri-oval, Villopoto jumped out in front at the start of the main event, only to have a red flag force a re-start. After the racers lined up at the starting gate again, the Monster Energy Kawasaki racer had another strong start, claiming the holeshot. Villopoto would hold onto that advantage to lead every lap and withstood a late effort by Ryan Dungey for the win.

Tonight was good, says Villopoto. I got two good starts and rode a solid race. I was a little worried when red flag came out, because I got such a good start. I knew I needed to do it again and I got an even better start the second time. We are chipping away at the points lead and I know what I need to do.

Despite his series-leading fourth win, Villopoto still trails Rockstar Makita Suzuki s Dungey by 20 points in the standings. Dungey did not have as strong a start as Villopoto, finishing the first two laps in third behind San Manual Yamaha s Josh Hill. Dungey worked his way into second by the third lap but Villopoto was uncatchable. Honda Red Bull Racings Trey Canard finished third to complete the podium.

I felt great, but I needed to get a little bit of a better start, says Dungey. I felt great; the team did a great job; and we have a great setup, but I came up a little short. Fitness-wise and bike setup-wise, I felt awesome.

Chad Reed returned to the track at Daytona for the first time since breaking his hand at the Phoenix round. Reed took part in the practices but did not compete. Reed is expected to race at the March 13 round in Toronto.

I achieved what I wanted to achieve this weekend, says Reed. I wanted to see where I was at. I love racing and it was killing me watching the races. I wanted to get out there and ride. My hand is still bothering me and I want to be healthy and 100 percent when I come back to race.
