Stewart wins tenth of the season
By Motorcycle.Com Staff, Apr. 07, 2009
James Stewart won his tenth win of the season to cut Chad Reeds lead in the AMA Supercross standings to five points.

Racing before 31,653 fans at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium in his home state, San Manuel Yamahas Stewart out-dueled Rockstar Makita Suzukis Reed, winning by 3.664 seconds.

Reed took an early advantage passing teammate and holeshot winner Mike Alessi on the second turn with Stewart on his tail. Stewart kept looking for a chance to pass but Reed held him off for the first half of the 20-lap race.

Stewart finally found his opening on lap 13 and briefly took the lead but Reed soon reeled him in and pulled ahead once more. A lap later, Stewart took advantage of another opening to gain the lead, this time for good.

It was great to get such a good start on the Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 and to get out front and lead a few laps, says Reed. James Stewart rode a good race and I cant take anything away from him. I needed that little kick in the butt.

James Stewart soars to victory in the first AMA Supercross race held in Jacksonville.
Stewarts win, his tenth in 14 races this season, ties him with Jeremy McGrath for most victories by a Yamaha rider in one season. The win was also the 35th in his career, but Stewarts focus is on the championship, not his personal records. Despite holding a 10-3 edge in race victories, Stewart remains 5 points behind Reed with three rounds remaining. The battle for the title has been fierce; Stewart says he and Reed collided over the triple jump during the race.

The championships on the line, and there is tension. If I threw dirt at (Reed), or he threw dirt at me, were going to flare up, and its just part of racing, says Stewart. He rode great tonight. I cant take anything away from him, and for me, I just came out on the better end. I have a week off to regroup, and well see what happens.

Geico Powersports Hondas Kevin Windham finished third for his second podium result of the season.

The 2009 AMA Supercross series continues at Qwest Field in Seattle, Wash. on April 18.
