The 2010 BMW R1200RT, R1200GS and R1200 GS Adventure will be powered by a 1,170cc DOHC flat twin “Boxer” engine, previously only used in the BMW HP2 Sport. The engine has been tweaked to meet the specific requirements of the R1200RT tourer and the R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure’s enduro riding styles.
BMW says the new engine can produce 110hp at 7,750 rpm (an increase of 5hp for the GS models from 2009) and 88 ft-lb. of torque at 6,000 rpm (up 3 ft-lb. for all three models from 2009). Engine speed has also increased to 8,500 rpm from 8,000 rpm for a broader power band.
The R1200RT gets a new audio system featuring an optional “multi-controller” interface installed to the inside of the left handlebar grip. The new multi-controller wheel responds to rotation and pressing like the wheel on a mouse, enabling control of radio stations and volume. BMW has discontinued the R1200RT’s installed CD player, but external CD players as well as iPods and MP3 players can be plugged in.
The 2010 R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure get new windshields with larger bolts for easier adjustment. Also new is an optional LED headlight.
BMW has not announced pricing on any of the new 2010 R-Series motorcycles.
