Organizers say the 2009 Ride to Work Day will be the largest ever in the events 18-year history.

Ride to Work Day, to be held a month from now on June 15, began in the United States in 1992 and has grown to an international event endorsed by the International Motorcycling Federation to promote the practical side of riding.

Event organizers say this years Ride to Work Day will be the largest ever as a weakened global economy causes commuters to turn to motorcycles and scooters as alternatives to automobiles.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, and

the Department of Transportation, Americans use over 80 million cars and light trucks to commute to work each day, with 200,000 motorcycles and scooters sharing the road. That number is expected to swell on Ride to Work Day as more of Americas 8,000,000 motorcycles are put to use.

The demonstration aims to show that motorcycles make parking easier and help traffic flow better. A good turn out on Ride to Work Day will help raise public and government awareness about the benefits of riding, and may improve employer recognition and support for two-wheeled commuting.
