Based on an all-new chassis specifically designed for trikes, the Tri Glide Ultra features the styling cues and touring features of the Ultra Classic Electra Glide.
The new chassis was created to manage the pressures of the extra weight and steering forces required for a three-wheeled vehicle over a standard motorcycle. The rear axle is composed of an aluminum center section with steel axle tubes. Like the rest of Harley-Davidson’s line, the Tri Glide uses a belt final drive. Rear suspension is provided by dual air-adjustable rear shock absorbers.
Up front, the Tri Glide’s fork is 1.775 inches longer than Harley-Davidson’s regular Touring bikes while the rake is increased to 32 degrees from 29.25 degrees.
Braking is provided by dual front disc brakes and a Hayes Brake dual-disc rear brake system with a lever-controlled integrated parking brake.
Powering the Tri Glide is a Twin Cam 103 V-Twin engine with Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection providing a claimed 101 ft lb of torque. Like Harley-Davidson’s regular Touring bikes, the Tri Glide uses a six-speed cruise drive transmission, but an optional electric reverse integrated with the rear differential assembly and a handlebar-mounted module is available as an option.
The Motor Company’s design team gave the Tri Glide a similar look to the Ultra Classic, including the ‘bat wing’ fairing and auxiliary driving lamps.
The composite rear fenders complement the front fender and, because they are separate pieces from the rest of the rear body, they can be individually removed for repair or replacement. Rear lighting is mounted on each fender, and the Tour Pak luggage compartment features side-running LED lights like the Ultra Classic.
The Tri Glide’s molded-composite trunk provides 4.5 cubic feet of storage space. Together with the Tour Pak, Harley-Davidson says the Tri Glide has a storage capacity of 6.56 cubic feet and can carry up to 80 pounds.
The 16-inch front wheel is three inches wide and is fitted with a MT90B16 tire while the 15-inch rear wheels are five inches wide and fitted with P205/65R15 tires.
Available in ‘Vivid Black’, ‘Dark Blue Pearl’ and ‘Red Hot Sunglo’, the 2009 Tri Glide Ultra Classic retails for $29,999. The electric reverse option is available for an additional $1,195.
