Available in Europe since March, the delayed U.S. release of the updated F650GS has moved the dual-sport into BMW’s 2009 model line.
Though it continues the lineage of the F650GS label first introduced in 2000, the 2009 model is actually based on the upcoming F800GS. Unlike its single-cylinder 652cc predecessors, the 2009 F650GS is powered by a retuned version of the F800GS’s water-cooled 798cc four-stroke engine.
BMW says the F650GS has an output of 71 bhp at 7,000 rpm with 55 lb/ft at 4,500 rpm, compared to the F800GS’s claimed 85 bhp at 7,500 rpm and 62 lb/ft at 5,750 rpm.
The F650GS is built around a steel tube trellis frame with a double-sided swing arm and chain drive. Billed as an entry-level machine, the F650GS has a 32.2-inch seat height and the fuel tank is located under the seat to provide a low center of gravity for easier handling. BMW says the cast aluminum wheels and telescopic forks also help to provide a smooth and precise ride.
The 2009 F650GS retails for $8,255, but an additional package featuring heated hand grips, anti-lock brakes, on-board computer and white turn signals is also available for $9,760. BMW offers three color options – Flame Red, Iceberg Silver Metallic and Azure Blue Metallic.
The 2009 BMW F800GS is expected to arrive in the fall.
