2019 BMW R1250 Models Certified by CARB

New R1250GS, R1250 GSA, R1250R, R1250RS and R1250RT for 2019 with 1254cc engine

  • The California Air Resources Board has certified a new BMW engine, confirming an entire new range of 1254cc R models for 2019. According to the new CARB executive order, the engine will be equipped on five models: the R1250GS, R1250GS Adventure, R1250R, R1250RS and R1250RT.

A 1254cc engine would represent an 84cc increase over the existing R1200 models’ 1170cc Boxer. Despite the larger displacement, the executive order shows a reduction in hydrocarbon emissions from 0.07 g/km to 0.04 g/km, likely thanks to a the addition of a new heated O2 sensor listed in the document.

There are also rumors that BMW is working on a variable valve timing system for the new Boxer engine, but the CARB executive order provides no information either confirming or disproving VVT. We’ve already seen spy photos of the 2019 R1250RT in March with some different-looking cam covers, so there may be some validity to the VVT rumors.

Spy photographer Bernhard Hohne of BMH-Images sent us these photos of what we now assume to be the 2019 BMW R1250RT.

The big surprise is that BMW would introduce the new engine across all five R models instead of doing them one at a time, as it has done in past iterations, such as when it introduced the water-cooled heads.

We’ve taken the liberty of helping BMW update the 2019 GS paint scheme in Photoshop to reflect the new model name. Bitte.

We expect BMW to reveal its new 2019 R1250 lineup at the fall’s two big motorcycle shows, Intermot in October or EICMA in November. Check back here at Motorcycle.com for more information as it becomes available.
