Red face 1982 shaft drive?

Guys (and gals),

I've got about 35K experience on a 395cc Honda (530 series roller chain). Now, I have a strong lead on a shaft drive 1982 GS650G. I like the "old-school air-cooled" bikes, I'll see it soon.

My question is about the shaft drive. I know chains can be very high-maintenance. Shaft drives are pretty reliable, but is there anything I need to know about them?

Anything to look for on this particular model? Does it have a center stand? What about the nomenclature? Were there any minor variations, like with the Saturn SL, SL1, SL2, SC, SW (like Honda had the CM400A with Hondamatic)?

If the bike looks good in person, I will likely 'go for it'. I just hope you'll let me know anything to watch out for. Thanks for reading.

The last thing to worry about on an '82 Suzuki is the shaft drive. The main thing to worry about is the alternator. They had a tendency to fry. I had an '82 1100 and replaced the stock voltage regulator with an aftermarket one that solved the melting stator problem. That was over ten years ago. I don't know if those regulators are still available. Google is your friend.
