I have a 2006 Blvd C90T Suzuki. It has a Catilatic Converter on my exhaust. My Question is If I bypass it what will I have to do to the engine to keep it running top shape. The back pressure will change. Rusty1949

What? Tired of breathing clean air?
Enjoy flat-spots and endless "tuning" to make a bike run like Ass? Think that's what is keeping the bike from being a real "powerhouse"? By all means, just "punch the cat" and find a Power Commander, then start tuning-away.

SO what your telling me is that you all don't know. I went to Suzuki dealer and they told me that no prolem will happen because I have electronic ignition. I don't want my bike to run like ass. I want it to sound good with stock muffler not ot loud but mellow. Rusty

Your dealer is full of sh!t.
We DO know. You'll need to buy a power commander and fuss with it for ages to get your mixture balanced for the change in the exhaust. But even then you'll likely have running issues. And, as people said, you'll just be adding to the crap air we all have to breathe.

I'm certain your Stea... I mean Dealer would absolutely LOVE to sell you a $1285 Leo Vince pipe, a $255 Torker air-filter setup, and a $372 Power Commander USB, then install and "tune" it for you for a week or two at their discount rate of $85/hr.
And the more you come back, the more they're willing to help you get that tune "dialed in perfect", because that $85/hr is "just between friends". All for a gain of only 6hp at an RPM that wouldn't let your engine live for long, were you to keep it in that range. The only penalty would be the 9hp "hole" in the rev-range you typically ride in. But I bet that frakker would "sound good". You think you're the only Sucker for a Dealer to offer this "service" to? Every Dealer I walk-into for oil or plugs or whatever when I'm out on the road offers me a "total package" for my bike. Obviously Federal Law means little to these guys, but I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop - West Coast Choppers got it awhile back for EPA violations as a Manufacturer - but they're gonna start targeting Dealerships and Individuals soon. $25K fine for each infraction on anything built after 2004. That'll be $75k per "tuned" bike - pipe, air-intake, and PC-USB.

If you want it louder and avoid the occasional .38 Speciallike backfires you will have to screw with the mixture. The C90T is so mildly cammed that changing the exhaust/intake probably won't hurt the power too much. Nor will it help much even if you get it tuned exactly. Your choice. Most likely scenario is the loss of a couple HP in the midrange and a couple HP gain at redline. A slightly loder pipe probably won't cause much mixture problem since the engine is so mildly tuned.
Removing a cat from a vehicle is worth a $10K fine according to the USDOT.

I bought a '05 C90 with V&H pipes, A "Bully" fuel pro., and a Suzuki tach. Ran it for a year like that- was going through a set of plugs every 500 mi., backfires, backfires while starting, power loss after sitting at a red light no matter where I had the Bully set. I contacted GMan Ind.(maker of the Bully) about the issues and followed their advice, but to no solution. So I found and installed a stock set of pipes, removed the Bully, diconnected the tach. I have read in other forums about the tachs not working well with the bike. A mechanic at my local dealer even said they had issues.
Now the bike runs great- maybe a very small amount of power loss and a good increase in fuel mileage. Starts well every time, don't have to rev it before I kill it so it doesn't backfire the next time I start it. |
