Sutter Buttes and Oroville Dam
Here are a few pictures I would like to share of a ride I took last month. I had just got my RT back from the shop and wanted to see if everything was OK. The U-Joint went out while on the freeway. I had no plans at all. Just took a 183 mile ride on some back roads south and east of where I live... Absolutely no cars! ![]() A nice day to test ride the RT! ![]() The Sutter Buttes - The World's Smallest Mountain Range! ![]() As far as I know public access to the Sutter Buttes is limited. Much of the land is privately held by cattle and sheep ranchers, but a number of naturalists and local organizations, including the Middles Mountain Foundation lead hikes through most areas. Just a historical fact I would like to share… In 1963, a missile silo complex containing three separate Titan I ICBM missiles was constructed near the base of the Sutter Buttes. The site was only active from 1963 to 1965, and it was decommissioned and mostly dismantled in 1965. Click here for an Aerial View of the Missile Complex. .Oroville Dam – The Nation’s Tallest Dam! Even from this far away it looks massive! ![]() I’ve only seen water coming over the Lake Oroville Spillway a few times in my life. It is a spectacular sight to see! ![]() They’ll let you drive over the dam. ![]() What a beautiful day! ![]() ![]() Looks like we need a little more water. ![]() You can see the Sutter Buttes (The world's smallest mountain range) from top of Oroville Dam (The nation’s tallest dam). ![]() ![]() This year I plan to go to both of these... The 15th Annual Salmon Festival is held this year from Sept 25 - 27, 2009. and The Return of the Salmon Festival. It will be this year on Oct 17, 2009 at the Coleman Fish Hatchery. If you are ever in Butte County and not sure what to do, you may want to check out this link: Butte County's Calendar of Events I hope you liked my ride! Real cool pics, I miss riding by myself, with only a camera to record where I went.
Last ride I did like that took the the Citx X down the Highway 111 to the Salton Sea, came back on the old road over the pass to Riverside, was a brilliant day with almost no cars (weekday). Cool stuff there Paul.
