You know, I still feel badly for the officer who was attacked, support the police in general and feel that they basically do a good job for little pay, this "canyon racers" comment is absolute bull$*it. Talk about stupid generalizations. If they're looking for support from the motorcycle community to help catch the perpetrators they're sure not helping themselves with comments like that.

I have just two responses:

1. Did you say you lost your dog?

2. How do did you manage to mount your gun rack to your motorcycle?

I went on a group ride (mostly sportbikes) yesterday and encountered the checkpoint. All vehicles on the highway were being stopped. My firsthand experience is the CHP officer was extremely polite and professional. Everyone else in the group experienced the same with the officers they talked to (3 CHP and 1 OC Sheriff). One person in our group is a cop, and he even thought it was exceptional.

Several people at work went to the local Sportbike Night at a burger joint last week. There were several officers distributing flyers, and a get-well card was circulated and given to the officers to deliver to their colleague.

In both cases, everyone felt the CHP is definitely NOT grouping anyone on two wheels with the idiots who attacked the officer. My impression is they see riders as part of solving the case.

Default You're right.

A lot of riders, including this website, tend to automatically be against the motorcyclist any time someone has a problem with something a motorcyclist does, because the rider wasn't low profile enough, or whatever. Like we're all supposed to just tip-toe around the cage driving lemming masses for the sake of motorcycling's image. I don't think this attitude does anyone any favors, and riders should be on the side of riders (unless they're really bike thieves beating up cops) when it comes to things that don't hurt anyone else. That thing in TN you just mentioned shoulda been front page all over. This story isn't at all important in comparison. Good to see you know what side you're on.

That's an interesting point and one that if presented by the CHP to the public (and especially the press), would go a long way in re-establishing the trust and faith in the law-enforcement community - at least from the eyes of those of us that choose to ride. I know that I feel much more drawn to help with the solution, when I feel that I am not being labeled as part of the problem.

Police use alot of psychology in their work, They're obviously using the 'sub culture "canyon racers" ' line to aggrivate people who are 'normal upstanding citiczens' and get them involved. It's a good strategy. However, being the open minded, unbiased person I am, I could easily wonder if the policeman did something 'above and beyond the call of duty', so to speak, to cause these motorcyclists to assault (defend themselves from?) the policeman. As the saying goes.. The possibilities are endless. None of us can make any accusations nor form opinions without knowing everything that happened. But, no matter what, physical harm was done to a policeman and the people that did it need to be found, and hopefully justice can be served.

I just read the report about the man killed in TN by the police officer.

http://www.knoxnews.com/news/25470.shtml

This is quite a sad story. The motorcyclist left behind three children. He was divorced but had custody of his kids.

The police officer had had two prior suspensions. One for not reporting to his superior about being involved in a high pursuit chase earlier in the day and another just being a punk no doubt. At least that's what the report says.

Another officer radioed to him that a motorcycle was approching at a high rate of speed. Sounds like the officer pulled his cruiser into the far left lane to try and block the rider.

Now the rider is dead, three kids are left father less. Maybe now they will see this idiot doesn't deserve to where a badge and gun. I mean how many times does it take until they figure out this guy sucks.

What always bothers me is how the cops pull out all the stops when it comes to catching someone that has done one of their own harm. Too bad when Joe Blow citizen is murdered, raped or mugged. Afterall, it is only the citizens that pay for the cops salaries for their protection, and the cops tacitly accept the risk that comes with getting paid for doing what they do. What does this have to do with motorcycles baffles me, but it is a lot cheaper than paying a therapist to listen to me whine.
