First of all receiving Stolen Property worth greater than $400 is a felony (Cal Penal Code 496), not a midemeanor.

Multiple counts cause consecutive sentences lengthening prison time.

Before you say "light sentence," would you like to spend 5 years and eight months in prison? I know you are probably not a crook, but it remains a substantial time to be off of the street even for a crook. That is the acutal prison time after time off for "good behavior." Which is a whole other discussion best left for another time and place.

Did you see that the article mentions a bike that was stolen was recovered becasue it had Lo-Jack installed. Maybe worth a thought if yours is an expensive bike. Might tip the odds in your favor. No, I do not work for or sell Lo-Jack.

True, I wouldn't want to live there myself either. However, that wasn't my point. The point was that harsh punishment works as an effective deterrent for property theft. Why it does - simple. With the potential risk of getting a 15 year prison term, theft becomes not profitable. Note that it won't work the same for violence/hate crimes because they have another roots. But theft is a pure business and as soon as it is made not profitable, no one will do it.

As far as the government dealing harshly with criminals - it is the same as with medication - take the right amount and you will live and your health will improve. Take the wrong amount and you will die or become crippled for life.

How about one way locks on their bedroom door that keep them inside the room at night, no permission to own any weapon or home security system, and a sign outside their homes that reads "Rob me" with a notice from the DA that says they will not prosecute anyone for taking their stuff, for life?

Well, maybe. In Merry Olde England, they used to have pickpockets working the crowds watching pickpockets get hung. No one thinks it can happen to them, I guess.

I can start a bike in less than minute, It's not really that hard. Easier if the forks aren't locked.
