Well, it IS the west...bring back the rope and stout tree limb and watch the bike theft rate drop.

Both of my bikes were stolen in '91 - a '71 Honda and an '82 Kawasaki.

Thieves are opportunists, they don't give a flip.

They were stolen because I didn't have them locked-up in a secure area. And, because I wasn't there to catch them in the act, and shoot them in the Three-Asterisk.

You only need a Hook to lift-up and dump a garbage can.

Hell, garbagemen make pretty good money (for what they do).

As long as we have expensive stuff, there will be someone to steal it no matter what punishment we threaten people with. Years ago I just came to the conclusion that, over the course of my life, I'll get ripped off a few times. So, I take reasonable precautions (not going to leave my key in my bike) and then don't worry about it.

When I gotten ripped, report it to the cops, hope for the best, and move on.

I know (hope) there is a little humour in the hang-them-cut-off-their-hands-then-shoot-them lines, but, well... it's just a motorcycle and they'll keep making more of them.

Note that I love my bike (a nicely accessorized, carefully taken care of Ducati) as much as the next guy on this list.

Old BMW's are rarely stolen. Mine is 15 yrs old. Remember there has to be a market for the stolen bikes/parts for theft to be profitable (sic)

True and not about the stealing expensive stuff no matter what the punishment is. There's an example. In Uzbekistan, one of the former USSR republics, car theft became prevalent, a really serious problem. As a result they passed a bill - 15 years of prison for car theft. Several loud cases shortly after the bill was passed and the car theft rate dropped to zero. Right now people routinely leave cars open on the street overnight. Some go as far as never removing the keys.

$40 K custom = God's way of saying that the person has waaaay too much money. Theft of same - God saying that you need to reconsider your priorities. I bet it was not locked. (Didn't want to scratch the paint, don't ya know?) The $40 K custom was only worth about $20 K after he rode it away from the place he bought it.

Maybe the cops had a witness who saw them use the skateboards. Umm, and why did 't Joe public say something? - because they don't see motorcycles even when they are being stolen or care.

As a bicyclist, I was taught long ago to NEVER let it out of your sight and preferably out of your grasp.

As for all of you "cut off their hands, shoot'em folks. " Remeber that they still have theives in Saudi Arabia and that people have been shooting theives for a long time - however no end to theft. Is it worth it for YOU to go to Jail for killing someone over a motorcycle? C'mon it's a motorcycle! If they come for me or my wife or kids, then I break out the 12 ga. riot gun. A lovely weapon - don't even have to aim! (And yes I do know how to use it!! Thanks to a little stint in Vietnam, I also have no hesitation in doing so.)

Yeah, but in Uzbekistan they don't have an army of social workers and lawyers to blame criminal behavior on everything from twinkies to parents that yell at their kids every once in a while.

I think you said it all when you said "in Uzbekistan a former USSR rerpublics" etc. Personally, I don't want to live under those coditions because I would expect their government to deal harshly not just with car theives, but with all things they dislike - such as dissent, protests and gun ownership and - well you get my drift.
