Better yet. Spray the area with Agent Orange and DDT. Then use it for a nucular waste suppository.

Default Yeah! That worked in 'Nam!

We sure kept Viet Nam and Cambodia from going communist with that strategy! Oh, no, wait, it didn't.

If we could only have killed all of them, then it would have worked.

I'd say the mistake is scarier than them doing it on purpose. Was it only a mistake after they got caught? It was signed into law without anyone reading it?

Any military operation that's micro-managed by politicians is bound to fail. The differance between WW2 and our last few little soirees was that Roosevelt was smart enough to point the boys in the right direction and let them do the job.

Harris's Night Area Bombing campaign was incredibly brutal and indescriminate but it was also very effective, "if you can't kill them at work in the factories, kill them at home in bed" The object is to eliminate the enemy's ability to wage war. Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin understood that. Kennedy, Johnson and both Bush's appearently did not.

About the same level of mistake as your girlfriend ‘accidentally’ getting pregnant after years of pushing you to get married. I have a number of friends that really believe their oldest child wasn’t planned.

No chance these nice folks deliberately making a mistake no?

Sorry, bud, I think that Gabe is right here. Big unit tactics just don't work in guerilla warfare. The Brits successfully defeated the communist insurgency in Malaysia with small unit tactics. But the US military was addicted to big unit tactics. Indiscriminate bombing only creates more guerillas.

And it's too bad, too. Look at the horrors the communists perpetrated in Southeast Asia after we abandonded South Vietnam after years of incompetent military action.

my point was more that the the field commanders should have the freedom to determine the tactics based on local conditions rather than political leadership and politicaly motivated JCS decisions. For example bombing Hanoi and bombing mining and Haiphong harbor during Rolling Thunder and Linebacker 1 & 2. Those campaigns were showing success intil Macnamara and Johnson got the willies and ordered pauses giving the NVA a chance to regroup.

I agree big unit tactics don't work with guerilla warfare as we found out and the Soviets found out in Afghanistan, but sustained air bombardment against industrial and transport centers and supply systems like the RAF and USAAF conducted are crucial in reducing the enemy's ability to conduct operations.
