The point is that style used to imitate the rich - stay pale if the rich can afford to stay pale, stay dark when the rich can afford to get outside, stay overweight if the rich eat better. Now, styles mimic the poor and their choices instead of the rich.

If the poor rebel against the rich naturally (and I think they do) then how are they supposed to rebel symbolically when the rich copy whatever they do? Tattoos have led to scarification, objects being imbedded under the skin, amputations ... and understanding WHY these extremes have been adopted helps us better understand the poor and how they react to power and wealth.

In other words, I don't think it is a completely useless study.

"The extremity of such action may be understood as measure of the extreme value of symbolic territory for the socially and economically disenfranchised"

I did a comparison with my Dad sometime last year.

His salary when he started at his company was 12K a year. His house was 19K (1.58 x yearly salary) and his first new car was 2.5K (0.208 x yearly salary). Both were bought in the year he started work.

My salary at the present moment is 38K. My house was 120K (3.15 x salary) and my Toyota Echo was 16K (0.42 x salary). In both cases, we bought entry level houses and cars, but both purchases were considerably more of an expenditure for myself than it was for my Dad.

The gist is that income has not stayed pace with inflation in any income bracket except the top one, which is where it has outpaced inflation many times over.

The working class guy drives a Ford F250 now jb. He's also got a toybox trailer full of quads.

Just park on I8 on a Sunday evening and watch the absolute parade coming back from the desert.

The F250 is the top selling truck in SD county.

I dunno. Just think of it as the rich pageantry of American democracy, where rich white guys aspire to look like po' white trash (tats, choppers) and poor black guys aspire to look like rich white guys (Rolex, Mercedes).

Either way, they're pathetic style-lemmings.

Me, I'll stick with my jeans, t-shirts, sensible cars, practical motorcycles and unsullied skin.

I once had a PoliSci professor like that. Students actually brought dictionairies into the class to figure out what the hell he was saying.

I don't' know if he ever realized that part of teaching is communication. Most of the text books now seem to be written to impress their colleagues rather than educate students.
