I have to agree about GM and Chryslers being crap. But my Ford Taurus with 160,000 miles and running strong tells me that the americans can make reliable efficient autos. (26mpg)I wouldn't argue that for the most part the Asian mfgs. are better quality, but it is Corporate greed that got us/US into this mess. Yes some of the Unions have gotton out of hand. But no farther out than many if not most of the Corp. boardrooms. I have no sympathy for most Corporations, especially the airlines. Let'em go tits up. Southwest can handle all the business, and make a nice profit.

(G)ross (D)omestic (P)roduct: sum toto of production of an economy.

I'm quite sure that 330 million people should be able to outproduce a country of 5.2 million. Let's take your figures and work on a per capita basis, though, for a more accurate comparison:

12 370 000 000 000/330 000 000 = 37 048/ capita

158 400 000 000/5 000 000 = 31 680/capita

So the US outproduces Finland by 8.4% per capita. In exchange for that drop in productivity they get ... everything else. By every measure the UN uses to assess quality of life, Finland is ahead. Have you ever checked the rankings the UN puts out every year? Canada placed top of the list for most of the past decade based on those measures and most westery European nations (esp. Scandanavian ones) were right behind. The top 15 were all Socialist governments.

Why is that? The US produces more per capita than almost every nation in the world, but yet that wealth they are producing doesn't put them at the top of the list for quality of life. It should, but it tends to go to the pockets of the top 0.5% of earners in the country instead of getting more fairly spread around, so that tiny slice lives like kings and everyone else subsidizes their lifestyle. That still happens in Canada and Finland, but to a much lesser extent.

Canada has the same problem. Any electoral system that works on ridings tends to reward the two front runners disproportionately, entrenching them at the expense of every other party.

What percentage of the popular vote did the Greens get in the US last election? 6% or so? Why don't they have 6% of the seats in Congress or the Senate?

The riding system is why. The US and Canada both need proportional representation to get new voices heard on the national scale.

Unfortunately it won't happen, because it will hurt the two main parties. So it isn't in their best interest to make it happen.

I have to agree with that statement. Just look at what the reigning, not-so liberal government has accomplished in the last years!

"commies"?...sorry to be so blunt, but that is just plain ignorant. If you call kerry-voters commies, then everyone that does not ride a harley with two american flags sticking out the back is a commie too. C'm on!
