You folks crack me up.

The guy is a freaking STUD! I'm pretty sure if I knew him personally that we wouldn't get along. Other than that what part of his lifestyle can you possibly argue with. He makes millions of dollars a year being himself playing with motorcycles. He's marketed his persona into a money generating machine. When he's not dating rock stars he dating porn stars. His commuter car is a Ferrari.

Uh hello! Is there supposed to be something "wrong" or "undesirable" about that? (membes of the clergy and retired nuns not withstanding). Maybe his bikes performance parameter are unverifiable or overinflated. So freaking what. As choppers go they are cool and they go like stink. He's not trying to build a cafe racer here. Although I did notice in CW that he built very nice one for Honda. He's not a one trick pony like the Tutles at OCC. He can build what interests him. Just watch monster garage.

Don't get me wrong. My life doesn't exactly suck. I do a pretty decent job hopping up and restoring vintage Kawi and Yamaha 2-strokes (one of my main passions) for a hobby. But I'd go to a Jesse James Fantasy camp anytime.

2-cents...

I don't have any problem with him making piles of cash ( I have a ball fleecing KPail's relatives), it's just that the whole chopper thing is so played.

I'm fantasizing about a Yamaha RD400. That was my dream ride as a young lad.

Watcha got for me?

I think you nailed it pretty well. I'd never begrudge Jesse his success (though I'd never throw money away on his schlock... I've got plenty other ways to throw it away). And he isn't the only person to make wild claims about his products by any means. Nor is he the only person to pretend exclusivity while pandering to the masses all the while.

I just thought the article was a big laugh and it showed how foolish it is to take any "news" article seriously.

I always wanted an SR500. I think it'd be cool to have a thumper cafe` racer.

The chopper thing was played the second time one of the "bikers" got on TV with it.

Custom bikes are cool. I'm not overly interested in choppers because the engineering isn't super-trick blah blah blah - but that doesn't take away from the cool of custom. You have something that no-one else has. It's like a throwback to the days when you bought a car chassis, and then had a coachbuilder put the bodywork on it to suit your tastes.

The custom bike I'd want looks a lot more like a Ducati Desmosedici or an RC211V (and costs more than $150K, no doubt) - but that's because I'm kind of a nerd and words like reciprocating mass and forced induction make my naughty bits tingly.

That said, the article was a disaster. From what 3rd grade class did they pull that "author" anyway?

In order for the engineering to be even remotely 'trick', it would have to exist in the first place. Jesse James and all those like him have no idea what they are building in terms of true design capabilities. If it looks good enough it must be good enough to these knuckle-heads. I don't care if I was as rich as Bill Gates, I'd never sh!t away a dime for this crap.

A little envious, are we??

I don't see a darned thing wrong with the custom chopper craze or the popularity of Monster Garage, American Chopper, etc. So what if gaudy choppers are over-hyped. I think anything with a motor that goes down the road on two wheels (one behind the other) is cool. So what if James, Paulies Sr. and Jr. are sorta full of poopie. Hell 90% of the folks I know in from motorcycling are full of poopie and I still like most of them. Heck - I'm glad for James, et. al,. They are making a great living and having some fun in the process and there is nothing about that not to like. And some of their choppers really are cool even if I can easily make mincemeat of them performance wise with my very pedestrian CBR954RR. If owing one of those bikes makes someone happy how is that a bad thing?

Yeah - I make fun of chrome boat anchors too (see most of the recent articles on MO I've helped craft) but at the heart of it I admire anyone who gets into a garage and builds something that can be ridden down the road. No one forces anyone to buy one of these so even if they are a zillion bucks what's the harm, eh?

BTW - some of the wheelie pics in a recent MO feature were taken not too far up the street from JJ's joint in Long Beach. There was good MOness in that

Well said...the guys got talent and hes cashing in on it. His talents could be applied to other things but he's doing what he wants and making big bucks. And Im sure he doesnt care if MORONS wouldnt buy his stuff;most of us cant afford it anyway. More power to him.
