I think the 'F' stands for a 74 CI engine whether it is a Knuck, Pan, Shovel, Evo... etc. Sarnali would know. He's the MO Anal HD Authoity.

I think the F stands for Big Twin (separate engine and tranny) no matter what the displacement. Sportsters are X and Dynas, Tourers, and Softails are Fs.

No, he's right, I forgot they bumped the '41 Knuckle to 74 inchs and came out with the F designation. They also increased the 74 inch VL flathead to the UL 80 inch flattie. The W is for the 45in. flathead and the original X was for the boxer engined XA developed for North Africa in WW2
