China's government is the one betraying you by allowing foreign companies to set up these conditions in the first place. Your government should set minimum standards for rates of pay, workplace safety and working conditions. Here workers formed unions and fought for these rights and forced the government to enact laws guaranteeing them. The whole reason foreign corporations set up shop in China is the lack of any regulation there. It's up to you to establish some kind of workplace standards and basic workers rights.

It's not a case of hating China or anyone there, hate is a wasteful and corrosive emotion, it's the simple acknowledgement that every dollar I spend on Chinese made products allows those conditions to continue and allows our corporations to continue to exploit you and your countrymen and drains off money and work that this country and my fellow workers need.

why i said many foreigner still have many misunderstand on "New China?
many foreigner still have 80`s , 90`s picture in their brain , thousand of China people ride a bicycle in road, people work 12-14 hours every day, worker die in machine but nobody care him......
all those thing is 80`s , 90`s situation.
within last 6 or 7 years, China worker have big improvement of salary and welfare. they have minimum standards for rates of pay . but if you are boss and if you just pay minimum pay salary, you cannot hire any worker .
because most worker salary high than bank staff now. 2011 situation is worker more rich than office lady . because factory need offer eating and house to worker . worker can save more their $ . but if you work in bank or office. company will offer eating and house.

China have not workers formed unions, but worker will link up 100- 200 people at same their home town. that mean if you at factory side , you cannot just hire one worker from one same home town. you need hire all 100- 200 people from their union . so , if one worker work feel unhappy and want to leave. all 100- 200 people also will leave too.
this is more effect than workers formed unions , this is really effect by market force .
you can see more big company (General Electric) and country (Greece) also fall by workers unions inordinate request.

Well that's good to know. As I said I have little knowledge of China other than the conditions in the 80's and 90's. My cousin lived in Bejing for a number of years, her husband was the Cultural Attache` at the British Embassy, she enjoyed her stay there though admittedly her situation was unique. I am glad your working and living conditions have improved so much. We tend to get a slanted view of things here depending on who ever is reporting the news and whichever particular axe they have to grind, a free press doesn't mean an unbiased press.

It's interesting to see your perspective and it sounds like a very clever situation with the not-a-union comunity effort to keep people working, good luck with your endeavors.
