Estoril MotoGP Qualifying Cancelled

Hard rain fell after the third (second) practice session and Dorna has decided to abandon MotoGP qualifying. They will set the grid as per the lap times from the final practice session which puts Lorenzo on pole.

Spies focused on Valencia return despite ankle dislocation

The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider suffered the injury to his left ankle when he crashed during a sighting lap for the Estoril race, but is determined to ride next weekend in the final round of the season.

Ben Spies' bwin Grande Premio de Portugal weekend ended in an unfortunate manner on Sunday before the MotoGP race even started, when the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider dislocated his left ankle in a crash at turn four on a second sighting lap.
Having qualified in fifth position on the grid the 2010 Rookie of the Year was confident of another good result as he prepared to ride in the dry race, despite having only practiced in wet conditions. However, his fall meant he was unable to test his skills on the Portuguese circuit in a race situation and the 26 year-old will now undergo MRI scans in Spain on his ankle.
Despite the injury Spies is determined to make the final race of the campaign this weekend in Valencia, as he seeks to sign off a fantastic first full season in MotoGP with the Tech 3 set-up before his graduation to the factory Yamaha squad.
“I knew the race was going to be tough because I had never turned a lap in the dry on this track. The first sighting lap was fine and on the second I just made a mistake at turn four,” said the American. “Aoyama and Capirossi were in front of me and they nearly did the same thing. I just didn't have the left side of the tyre heated up enough and it spat me off.”
Spies continued: “I'm frustrated because I'm sure even in the dry I could have had a fairly good race. I've hurt my left ankle again and it's pretty painful right now. I'll have some more scans in Spain but my intention is to go to Valencia and race and hopefully do the test too. We'll have to wait and see but that's my plan right now.”
Spies also aggravated injuries sustained earlier in the season at Le Mans and Silverstone in the crash.

I to figured Nicky would do a lot better than fifth, in the opening stages he even led for a short time. Something wasn't quite right with his bike I agree. He should have been able to battle for third but just couldn't get close enough.

It was a shame to see Ben make his first real mistake Saturday. It's been a brilliant rookie year for him. I guess you could say even Spies has "ankles of clay." Hahahaha...I kill me.

Lorenzo's post-win "Astro-Dork" act is becoming a bit tired. Once would have been cool, maybe twice just to make sure everybody saw it. After that...just dumb.
