Default MotoGP Leg Flappin'

So, this weekend, I noticed a lot of the front runners flapping their legs out at the entrance to turns, mostly lefts. I thought it was exclusively lefts, but then I saw DePuniet flap out a right.

I don't see any of the 'Mericans doing it. Maybe they need to step up?

Can anyone shed some light on this strange, Karate-Kid like activity?

Somebody decided riding flattrack style on pavement helps out somehow... You know kids: "monkey see, monkey do."

It was a bet Rossi had with his buddies to see if other riders would follow. And they did. Rossi was the first one to do it.

Ha. That's just wrong.

And yet, so right!

In short, GP bikes have lousy engine braking by design. Throw the leg out for drag and the bike tips in easier. Rossi was the first to use it regularly, but the practice has found itself mainstream for the grid. Bet that doesn't happen as much when they switch back to the 100occ bikes. It's just a progression of the shifting off the bike lean to get the knee down. Who did that first- Schwantz, Rainey, Gardner?????

Yeah but they only do it on the left side.

I never see a right leg hang off.

Rossi uses it on both. Maybe the kiddies are just learning the technique.

I just can't wait until I see some squid doing it on the street.

I'll bet if I ride up Palomar Mountain they're all doing it!

I think Duke does it.

If sitting bolt upright with your knees gripping the tank was good enough for Mike the Bike and Ago it should be good enough for these young whippersnappers....
