Ducati started this trend when they petitioned for the 1000cc when racing 750s. Mostly, it has to do with the fact that with less cylinders you get less rpms. Even though the torque is better on twins and triples the drive only gets you so far once the headroom runs out.

Moke- here's a fact check. See if the 848 is legal in WSS. I'd bet it is. It does run in BSB superstock just like it did/does here in the FX/American Superbike class.

The newest triple (MV) will go racing next year and is rumored to be at 600 cc. If they race and manage to win then watch those rules get an update for the 2012 season. But there's also a rumor that BMW is working on a 675 triple; if that's the case and they go racing in WSS then I predict that the rules remain until at least 2015. Just a guess, but why work on the project unless you have already know that the class will remain unchange for at least 5 yrs.

Are you serious? Why would they do that? That's like going right after the Triumph Daytona 675. Does BMW really consider the triumph direct competition? That would be really interesting if this comes to fruition.

To be eligible for Supersport World Championship, a motorcycle must have a four-stroke engine of between 400 and 600cc for four-cylinder machines, and between 600 and 750cc for twins, and must satisfy the FIM homologation requirements.

BMW has the most powerful "stock" litre motor in the business. Cut a cylinder off and you may just have the most powerful triple on the market. The new bosses in BMW motorad like the need for speed and the new younger audience.
