I think Geraldine Ferraro was the first woman VP candidate but I suppose since Mondale got hammered so hard in that election it only counts in MN.

Here's your quick history lesson: the Republican Party that freed the slaves was hated by what was, until recently, the Republican base. For almost 100 years, the South was Democratic to the last white male voter. In the 60's, as the Dems became increasinly liberal and supported Civil Rights, a new trend emerged: "Presidential Republicans." These were Southern Dems who couldn't stand to vote for Johnson, Humphrey, et.al. In the 1980's, the Republicans created their "Southern Strategy," which was a shift to appeal to this base and begin to win local elections as well as national. Republicans had always been perceived as the party of rich elites. It worked, and the South underwent an enormous change from Democrat to Republican.

Interestingly, in recent years, the Republicans have begun losing elections in the South again. This is thought to be due to a disenchantment with the Republican's increasing the size of government (in total contrast to Regan era policies), Federalization of previously local domains, and a continued attack on the middle class. They have also been perceived as drifting away from the Creationist type regligious hyper-right. Democrats have figured this out, and have begun winning elections in previous Republican strongholds.

Here's my favorite summation of the Republican schitzophrenia: Mit Romney ranting about "Eastern Elites." He is a multi-multi millionaire, who was Govenor of an Eastern state!

Here's my favorite thing about all of this; there are still people that actually think that one party is better than the other party.

You are right but I haven't had this much fun watching this train wreck for years. And frankly, given the choice, I'd rather have an Ex-POW and a self-made hockey mom in the WH than more smarmy America hating lawyers. Wait til the Michelle "Whitey" video hits the blogoshpere. It's going to be a different sort of October surprise this year. I don't think I've seen the Rats more incompetent. (Biden, fer heaven's sake?) Or the Pubbies more effective. Too bad that no matter who wins we still go the route of socialist destruction.

Too bad the Founding Fathers didn't have the foresight to ban lawyers form running for office. If you picked 545 people at random from the phone book you'd get a better govt than we have with the current corrupt machines.
