"He ruled that the law does not violate one’s freedom of religion because the added costs due to potential head injuries would be an unnecessary strain on the public health system."

Wow. Now that's plain and simple illogic. The two have nothing to do with each other. One could say that the law doesn't discriminate because everyone has to wear one. But the above statement attributed to the judge is irrational. 'Potential' injuries place absolutely no strain on the health care system. Only actual injuries do. What a loonie.

An irrational collectivist judge.. well, Duh! That's a redundancy.

Wait a minute, how about they soak those turbans in heavy starch, or oatmeal. Make 'em stiff like a model railroad tunnel. That way they could still keep their religon straight, and be protected at the same time. And if they get shot and lie wounded on Afganistan's plains, and the women come out to cut up what remains, they just roll to their turban, and have a nice snack.

Sikhs are not muslims, people. Different cultures, similar styles.

It is going beyond absurd that these 'people" are coming to our country and then not wanting to live by our rules. If it's sooo bad here go back to Sikhland". Is it really such a violation to wear a helmet? Absurd. These people are wrecking our country and culture. Why did so many people immigrate to Canada in the past and adapt to our traditions, but these Indians seem to want to turn us all into their culture. Enough already!

Sikhs wear the turban and beard to show solidarity in their faith, it is not a "requirement" per se` there's a few in other boiler rooms where I work and the State Boiler Inspector is a Sikh, he has neither a beard nor wears a turban at work, neither do the other two. Doesn't make them any less Sikh or devoted to their faith.

If there's a helmet law in effect then wear a dam* helmet when you're on the bike, put your turban in a tank bag and put it back on when you arrive at your destination. Guru Nanak will understand.......

You realize that other religions do the same thing? Catholics and Protestants also have challenged laws that they claim require them to disobey the tenets of their faith. Would you also claim that all the Catholics and Protestants should go back where they came from?

Sachi,

Intolerance knows no bounds. Especially when it's close to home.

Apparently, to him it's a Sikh World, and he's an unhappy guy!

I wonder if you could just put a DOT equivalent (what does Canadaland require for helmets, anyway?) sticker on the turban - it's probably more protective than most beanies anyway. Frankly, I'm surprised that a turban would stay planted at speed...
