The 350 gets my vote for being the coolest hard core enthusiast old guy who rides at all kinds of elevation trailbike on the planet.

KTM is gearing up for when the MX formula calls for a 350cc motor. Can they compete HP wise with the Japanese MX bikes? At least KTM's don't explode every 15 hours.

And they are supposedly working the bugs out of a direct injected two stroke that will put the industry on it's ear.

The SX-F is about 5 peak HP down on the 450's. There is even more of a gap at lower RPM's, though.

You wouldn't know it to watch Alessi and Caroli, though.

It ought to do well off road, especially in tight Eastern events. Sometimes a 450 is too much, and a 250 (4 stroke) is not enough. 250 two strokes are still big out here, outside of MX, and the old KTM 400 EXC was/is very popular.

I agree about 450s being too much. My modded DRZ400 has the perfect hard core trail bike powerband. It is always hooked up, yet stout. It probably puts out around 45 hp. Problem with the DRZ is it weighs a ton and I am not getting any younger! It also could use a 6th gear and elevation compensating FI is the ticket for the mountain riding I do.

The following pic illustrates the point regarding power. I was able to ride wheelies all the way up this loose hill on my DRZ and my buddies could not do the same on their Husky and Yamaha 450s. I could not either when astride their bikes - their more copious and explosive power simply lit up the tire and the front ends came down. More was less here. While speed certainly is easier to come by on the flyweight CR250, I can't even think about trying silly wheelie tricks like this on it.



The smooth but controllably strong pulling 400 is very good for climbing tricky steep hunks of granite too



DRZ power all the way baby! LOL

In all seriousness, I think a high tech lightweight good running 350 could very well be the Goldilocks perfect off road engine for what I want in a dirt bike.
