“How do motorcycle-only checkpoints increase the safety of motorcyclists?” asks Ed Moreland, AMA senior vice president for government relations, in a letter to NHTSA Administrator David Strickland on Aug. 9. “Where do the selected states draw their authority to conduct” motorcycle-only safety checks?
Uh, yeah - that'd be the thing called the "U.S. Constitution". Powers not enumerated within that document are Reserved to the States, and the People.

However, they are NOT Constitutional to conduct these checkpoints using Federal Tax Dollars. Use your own damn state's money. THEN we'll see how your constituency likes it, when you're directly accountable and the Voters can see exactly WHOM it is targeting them......

Thats what UT's finest were doing at Miller this year. They set up a checkpoint almost back to I5 and only pulled over bikes. There were about 50 lined up on the side of the road.

And here I thought the ghost of Joan Claybrook was put to rest. This type of thing can be traced right back to loud pipes. All you rebels without a clue have finally pissed off enough people that they demand action.

Wrap it up as a "Safety Inspection" and tie it up with a bow. "Well your motorcycle looks fine, son but that non-standard exhaust is a violation of Federal Statutes and will have to go, We'll just issue you this citation for non-compliance and give you 30 days to get this vehicle inspected by the State Patrol before we pull the plate"....Next!

Really? Was it a checkpoint or did they have the decibel meter set up and just wave all the too loud bikes over? It's hard to imagine they could resist such low hanging fruit.

Honestly I've seen fewer checkpoint stops here in the 26 years I've been in Utah than I used to see in Hollywood each year. I've gotten caught twice in random CalifHP checks back in the 70s but never in Utah.

From what I heard, they were looking for motorcycle endorsements on licenses, and, of course, sniffing for booze.

The officers and officials involved claimed they had no idea that a motorcycle event was in the area. They shut it down when the lines of bikes went out into the highway.

At least, that's what I remember from the AMA article, anyway.

They pull this crap in NYC all the time, too.
