Check if the exhaust or headers are loose. An air leak anywhere along the line can cause a bit of a popping sound.

Is the popping on decel or accel? Hard downshifting will cause it to backfire but on decel only. Sachiwilson is right if the popping is on
accelleration. Probly an air leak.

What did you do to the exhaust system? "Punch out" the baffles? New slip on muffler? C'mon, you can tell us!

Probably lean popping on decel. You need to get it jetted properly and the popping should cease.

LR is correct: the straight pipes are leaning out the fuel mixture, so you need to adjust on the intake side. Since you may not be familiar with re-jetting a carb, you might want to go to a good shop for this. It won't be too expensive, probably under $100 with labor. It should clear up the popping and give you noticeably better performance.

A Honda Shadow with straight pipes? Stick some silencers on the end of the pipes, you'll notice an instant increase in power, and the popping will go away.

That's the best suggestion yet....
