Default need help 1980 Yamaha xs1100 special cam timing

I am doing a top end rebuild on a 1980 yamaha xs1100 special and I cant seem to get the cams to stay lined up properly. I am doing what the clymer manual says. Are there any tricks to doing this I have done it 7 times and it always ends up being off 1 or 2 teeth. This is very frustrating any advice is welcomed.

I remember that bike. Early Nipponese Chopper...a few of them were decent looking.

My advice to you, sir, is to start drinking heavily.

The 1980 XS1100 Special was my second road bike. Had a blast on that thing and took my first multi thousand mile road trip on it. Was a good looking bike.

Is the chain worn out? Cam chain tensioner? What all did you replace?

I took Spaceman's advise and took Jack with me to try again and I found that I had to set the flywheel a little before TDC and the cams right on and all is well in the end. Amazing what Jack can help figure out. Done for tonight tomorrow is the Youth deer hunt and I hope my son shoots the 11 pt weve been seeing . Sunday I finish the bike. This is my buddys bike mine is my 1983 Honda Magna VF750c
