It's not really the valves he's hearing. It's the engine singing:

"Oh we're the rocker arm assembly!

When I changed from mobil1 to Repsol the valve clatter became noticeable less. In addition my buddy's Street Triple was having notchy shifting until he switched to Redline. The 50% increase in price of Mobil1 didn't endear me either.
