I replaced my conventional oil with synthetic but did not replace my oil filter. will the leftover oil in the filter hurt my engine?

Assuming you had a reason to keep the 'old' filter, vice changing it out, I'd say the few ounces of 'old' oil that was in the filter won't make a lot of difference. I'm guessing you don't have many miles on the filter.
Not knowing the model of the bike, but most engines have trapped oil in them anyhow (that is, it can't be drained completely). I hope you used either a motorcycle-specific or a non-"energy-conserving" auto oil.

No, it won't. Conventional oil can be mixed with synthetic. The contamination you left in the filter is bad, but it won't kill the engine.

****************STOP IMMEDIATELY! YOUR ENGINE IS ABOUT TO EXPLODE***************
The only thing you can do is remove the oil filter, drain bolt and spark plugs, take your garden hose and starting from the left inject a small amount of dish soap into each cylinder and flush until the water coming out the bottom is clear. Then invert the motorcycle and using the oil drain hole, back flush the engine until the water coming out each spark plug hole is clear. Then soak the motorcycle in warm salt water for 48 hours, remove the license plate then discard the motorcycle in an environmentally approved fashion. Instal the license plate on a new motorcycle and use only the correct grade of El Cheapo Wal*Mart oil in future.

I wonder if he heard about flushing your radiator with a hose when the engine is running and got his fluids crossed. A stunning bit of work there...no doubt.
