Question What's wrong with it?

Bike is an 87 Ninja EX500, here's what happened.

I shut the bike off, but the bike didnt turn off, it kept sounding like it was trying to turn over. This would continue even if I took the key out. It did this repeatedly for a few minutes before it finally quit.

After it gave up, the bike was completely dead. None of the dashboard lights would light up when I turned the key to the on position.

I was able to bust start the bike a couple times, but even then it wouldnt idle, it would only sputter irregularly and at full throttle it would only go like 5 km/h.

So what's wrong with it? The starter? The electrical in the hand grip? It has a brand new battery in it, but now it appears to not be getting any power.

Something wrong with ignition switch, try that first. Get a cheap DVOM at Harbor Freight and start tracing wires. Have fun. A 5th of Ouzo helps things along nicely.

Your starter solenoid is stuck. Is is directly connected to the battery, even with the ignition off. Replace it, and recharge the battery. You should be OK.

You might need a new battery after this, as well - small-displacement batteries don't like being deep-cycled.

whack your starter with a wrench or fix it. Whatever your wallet allows.
