Old Bike, hasn't been started in years
Just picked up a 1980 Honda XL 125 S from a friend. It's been parked in a shed for the last 5 years and not started. I'm mechanically inclined, but this is my first try at getting an old engine like this to start. So far, no luck. Here's what I've done so far:

1. Tank and fuel system had been drained when the bike was stored so I double checked there was no old fuel gumming anything up and that there was no rust in the tank and then put new fuel in the tank. Opened up pet**** and fuel flowed out, and opening the adjustment screw on the bottom of the carb allows fuel to flow out there as well so I know fuel is making it that far.

2. I've replaced the oil in the bike, has a new spark plug, and a brand new freshly charged battery (6v bike batteries are hard to find!)

I've tried kick starting the thing over and over. I can manage to get a bit of a stutter out of the bike for about 4 or 5 seconds, but nothing beyond that. Adding a small amount of gas directly and replacing the plug yields about the same results. I've also tried to do a rolling start down a hill popping the bike out of N and into first or second with no luck. Bike has a flat back tire and a hole in the tube and tire so I can't do this very often as I have to fill the tire up and then give it a try before the air leaks out. It's an odd sized tire and I'm waiting on the UPS man to bring me a new one.

So, any suggestions? Compression seems good, it's getting spark...I believe it's getting fuel (gets as far as the carb anyway). Really don't want to have to shell out money for someone to fix it...I like being a do it yourselfer.

Carb is likely to be plugged up. You need to remove and dismantle it. Spray it out well with Gumout. Spray all the little passages. If they are plugged then small copper wire can be used to work the grunge out.

I'd be really surprised if the carb did not need an overhaul. Replace all the soft parts.
