I have a 1986 dr125 4 stroke and im wanting to know what a timing sensor is and what it does.

The timing sensor is an electro-mechanical device that detects the position of the crankshaft as it rotates. It's purpose is to trigger the spark in the cylinder(s) at the correct moment, usually at or near the top of the compression stroke. There's a lot of different types of timing sensors, magnetic, optical, etc. Usually they're bullet proof and last the life of the engine.
