An excellent point, and also a point that many car-tire advocates (they call themselves "Darksiders" for some damn reason) overlook:

If you crash your bike and the adjuster finds a car tire on it, you just kissed your coverage goodbye. Adjusters are looking for any reason to deny a claim, and improper or even worn-out tires give them their "out."

Not that I care either way about Darkside tires but it's not illegal. No reason that the insurance should care.
