Neutral issue

Im hoping someone can give me some insight into an issue I am having with my '84 Honda manga. When I put the bike in neutral with the clutch disengaged, everything is ok. As soon as I release the clutch lever and engage the clutch, there is some resistance. It feels like something is getting caught or rubbing inside the clutch/gear box. The bike stays in neutral and doesnt move on its own(its not stuck in 1st or 2nd gear). Anyone have any clues to whats causing this?

Yes, it's a 25 year old Honda that needs some work done on the clutch. Most likely the clutch basket from old age has got notches carved in the fingers of the basket, and this causes notchy clutch action, sometimes the plates get stuck in the "disengaged" posiiton, and you don't go anywhere. You can take the basket off and file the notches out, up to a point. That side case is a bytch to get off, so good luck (get a manual).

I'm neither for nor against that advice.

I've rebuilt the clutch master and slave cylinders so I know those are working. 2 strange things i've noticed:
-First is the issue mentioned above.
-Second, with the bike off and clutch engaged, when I put it in any 1st or 2nd gear, i can walk the bike about 1 foot before I feel some resistance in the motor, but its still fairly easy to continue to walk the bike. If I walk backwards, same thing: about 1 foot before I get some resistance.

Everything seems to be ok when riding it around. Shifts without issue, only when I go into neutral do i feel like there is some resistance. It sounds like I should check out the clutch plates and possibly replace them. Just wanted to check if anyone thought it might be a tranny issue.

I have no issues with Trannies - so long as they acknowledge that I'm Straight and leave me be, sexually.

It's a quarter-century old $4k UJM. Just ride the f'ing thing till it won't ride any more and then throw it away.
