Default 1992 Katana 750

Hope someone can help. I have 750 that has not been started for 4 years and only has 5000 original miles.( pick it up dirt cheap).
My question is what should I do to prep the cylinders before I hand crank it.Put oil in the cylinder? If so how much?
I have repair knowlege but I do not have experience in this area.

Joe

Some light oil in the cylinders is a good idea. About 10cc's per cylinder ought to do it. I'd use Marvel Mystery Oil, it'd do a good job of getting around the rings.

Presumably you'll change the sump/tank oil before starting, and drain and replace the fuel.

Cool

Then get a complete rebuild kit for the carbs. That wont be cheap.

Do as Ken sez and then hand crank it a bunch. Make sure you drain the fuel tank completely and fill completely with fresh gas. That will dilute the residue of paint thinner that the old gasoline turned into while it was sitting.

Better pull the drain screws out of the carbs and make sure they are drained. You can spray some carb cleaner into the bowls through the drain plugs. Put the screws back in and turn the petc0ck to 'prime' to fill the float bowls. Then drain them gain, looking for particles of crap. If there's still crap do the spray/fill/drain thing again.

Replace the crankcase oil/filter too.

Battery charged? The battery is almost sure to be sulphated and junk and you will almost certainly need a new one. Try starting it now. Do not rev it at all until the oil pressure light has gone off for a few seconds. You just might be ready to roll. If it runs like crap then you probably need to pull the carbs and disassemble and clean them.

Letting an engine sit is one of the worst things you can do to it.

Good advice here. I rescue a couple of bikes a year.

Expect to have to rebuild the carbs. There's a guy on Ebay who will do it a reasonable cost, exchanging your carbs for short turn around.
