Can you live without second gear?

Avoid this bike, unless you can afford to just throw it away. Blown second gear is a common symptom of abuse. It results from speed shifting from first to second under full throttle load.

Probably both the gear set and one or two shift forks will need replacement.

Unless you can fix it, find another bike.

It has a blown transmission. The engagement dogs have been stripped off 2nd gear and the pieces are laying in the bottom of the crankcase ready to cause even more catastrophic damage. It is worth LESS THAN NOTHING!

You run into this a occasionally.... a low level criminal who decides to try to dump his broken POS off on some unsuspecting person. Tar and feathers were custom made for the @sshole who is trying to sell you this POS.

Time to plan on buying something else. Get a bike that doesn't need the trans fixed right out of the gate.

Agreed its probably a sheered of engagement dog, common when speed shifting as stated, or wheelies. Unless you have around another 2k or more to put into it, I'd say stay away.

At least he told you 2nd gear was broken? Cant be all that bad.

The bike is probably not worth what it will cost to fix it. Unless you are in love with the look and feel of that model and year, and there are no other ones available, I'd run away.

Probably would have become painfully obvious on the first ride........

While it's possible that it's only a couple of worn gears and a shift fork or two you are still talking in the area of $500 just for gears and forks. Not to mention a new gasket set (over $100). Bearings? And the manuals and special tools and 40 hours to do the rebuild if you already have experience with I-4 engines. And who knows what else needs to be replaced because this bike has been seriously abused. The Katana engine is noted for it's durability. The owner must have been murderous on that tranny.

Stunting in sportbikes is a terrible practice. The trannies are designed for high speed shifting not clutch dumping wheelies. A dirtbike might take this sort of abuse for years. It will ruin a sportbike.

Another reason to avoid the sportbike market. The new ones depreciate ruinously and the prevalance of stunters makes a used purchase a bad bet.

Oh come on, avoid the whole sportbike market because of a few stupid stunters? Thats a bit of a strech. There are many sportbikes that are used and in good shape. I should know I have a whole lot full of them?
