Unhappy Dead battery

Okay, I am new to all this motorcycle stuff. I bought a Qlink legacy this summer. I rode it a few weeks ago and everything was fine. I went to ride it today and the battery is dead. Can you buy a battery charger for this? Can you jump start it off of a car battery? What do I need to do? Please help!!! Jim

JRG,

Batteries is batteries!

First, check to make sure the battery connections are tight and relatively clean.

If they are, you can 'jump' a bike from an auto, but it is not good to leave the cables connected any longer than it takes to start the bike.

That being said, a year-old battery, even a cheapo Chinese one, is done a bit early. It could have lost a cell, or has had an internal failure. Or, you left the stereo on.

If you get it started with a jump, see if you have a bright headlight, or - even better - check the voltage across the battery for at least 14V. If neither exists, you may have a bad charging system. Which usually ruins the battery.

Good luck!

What pushrod and 12er said, only - don't start the car if you use one to jump the bike, just use the battery with the auto shut off - batteries are batteries, but charging-systems are NOT equal.

In the battle for voltage-superiority, might makes right, and your bike's charging-system WILL lose.

Thank's for mentioning not starting the car, seen many regulator/rectifier's "go pop" from do this, when the car is running.

WTF is a QLink Legacey? I'd check to see if it has a working charging system before I threw any money at it.

I'd be careful about using a car battery to jump a completely dead bike battery. If the smaller battery is completely dead you might get too great an initial current when hooking up the car battery and warp the plates thus destroying the smaller battery. I have some experience with this having spent 3 years dealing with batteries when I was in the Nav. I'd suggest getting a 1 or 2 amp motorcycle battery charger and taking my time charging it. Also be sure to check the fluid level first.

It's a Chinese scooter. It runs about $2K less than comparable Japanese and Italian scooters.
