Default I'm with Gritboy

Yep, but a WeeStrom is 420 pounds dry -- less with an aftermarket exhaust -- so it's definitely in Versys territory. Truth is that's still a bit much for real offroading... fine for trails and some rough stuff, but too bulking for narrow trails or big rocks.[/quote]

I rode my DL1000 in the Alcan 5000 (2nd place SOP class, 4th bike overall) and the Black Dog AMA dual sport two years running. If you've tried to cross a 7" tree with a 17" front wheel you've probably failed. Now I certainly agree that low weight beats high weight all other things remaining equal. No these bikes aren't really designed for hard core offroad, but if you're motivated enough, in shape, and do enough mods, you can do it. Now 100 lbs would probably be worth the smaller front wheel, but you don't get that kind of savings. That's like comparing a KLR/DR/XR-L etc. to one of the larger adventure tourers, and there's no comparison. The DL650 appears to have the combination I think would work well for long distance dirt competition. Having owned a GS, Tiger, Strom, KLR, DR, XT, KLX, etc. I've managed to try pretty much all of them. Obviously your opinion may vary.

The S500 was pretty easy. Lots of KLR650s and a BMW HP2 finished.

I guess it all depends where and how you ride. My "long-distance" dirtbike is a DRZ400S, but that's only because I can't resist the tight stuff.

Default Versys won a comparo

Just read a 8 bike mid weight adventure comparo by a Finnish mag: Versys won convincingly, runner up Vee-storm. BMW 650 second last Transalp biting the dust.

Which mag? Is there an online link or is this just available on paper?

Our northern neighbors seem to be off-roading with the Versys:
