I was looking at a new sportbike and am into the 600 class. I am noticing that most manufacturers have started to replace the underseat exhaust with a side exit exhaust. I know that sportbikes use to always have a side exhaust so I was wondering if there was a downside to the underseat style?

There are 2 downsides to underseat exhausts:

- They heat up the seating area.

- The mass of the mufflers and pipes is not concentrated at the center of the bike as well as it is with an under-engine setup.

Having said that, my own opinion is that the underseat exhaust style is worth whatever minor gains are had by under-engine configurations. This is especially true when compared to the huge cans you'll see along the sides of bikes like the ZX-14 etc.

A carbon fiber (aftermarket) underseat exhaust can help with "heat up the seating area". A CF exhaust does cost more than standard aluminum, though.
