Default What the hell is a pit bike?

Color me clueless. I've heard the term, seen some "pit bikes" for sale, and formed a vague notion of some kind of mini-dirtbike-moshpit concept.

What exactly is a pit bike and what does one use one for?

You've essentially hit-upon the physical appearance - as to what it "is" - it's a bike used for running-around the "pit" area at a race (moto and cage alike). Small, way-underpowered, some kind of cargo-utility capacity is the Name of The Game with these bikes.

Oft-times you'll see them painted/numbered in Team Livery. A bicycle can also serve as such (and is what I use myself).

So no dirt pit with stadium seating around it and gladiators riding 50cc dirtbikes battling it out? Drat.

I have used a 70cc kids dirtbike and a 50cc scooter as a pit bike. Anything to get me to the track restroom, food stand or safety briefing.
