Fun article. I recall chasing a manical German guy on a Gold Wing once on my TL1000. GWs can hustle if the pilot is demented enough!
The conclusion rings true. The BMW is for "retiring sport bike riders." That leaves the GW for the typical large body American. You midget magazine types are abnormalities you know. The average Gold Wing riding female passenger's left butt cheek weighs more than your dimunitive guest testing passenger's entire body. Good on you though. Petite women rock. ![]() Had sport bikes, on the FZ1 currently, the BMW is the next logical step. More likely a clean used C14 though, personal money supply being what it is. I always found a certain satisfaction hustling my geezer glide down a canyon road.
Being able to command a hefty bike shows how manly you are. |

You betcha, crankin and bankin on my bagger was fun...puffy hat strapped down tight....stripped coveralls flapping in the breeze......the hobnails in my low cut black work oxfords throwing up sparks as I flat-tracked around every corner........then back home for some whisky and coffee in my big chipped & stained white coffee mug!! ah..fun times indeed....

Much Closer than I would have figured!
The "Brand new" BMW - vs- 12 year old HONDA? The BMW is fabulous! However, the Gold Wing is a "winner". How many 12 year old computers or cell phones do you see tested against "last weeks" model? How many 12 year old cars or trucks can you test against the current model and come out with a result this close? Answer: ZERO! Yes, the 2012 Wing has been "tweaked" but it is not "Clean LCD Screen" engineered, it is still a 2001 model with many improvements! For me, "less is more", my big problem with the GL is the weight! Both Bikes are HEAVY, but if I had to choose between the two, the lighter BMW is more attractive. Time will tell if the K16 will last for 12 years and if time will be as kind to it as it has been to the HONDA's engineering marvel! Good engineering is timeless, HONDA is the definition of "good engineering"! |

Well Baba-San knew his business when he re-designed the 'Wing. Giving him the assignment was definitely a sound engineering decision. Knowing BMW's history I'm pretty sure the K1600 will be around for awhile too, they're also pretty good at engineering.

We're just happy it works most days. I use a Flash blocker on my browser and it makes things much better. On my iPad, the screen just flickers over and over. Just reset your brain to about 1999 and it will look fine. |
