Ok, so it's heavy, just how heavy is it? Does the feeling of ponderous weight disappear once underway and all that stuff?

I rode my friend's '09 450 recently. It's very well suited for the way we ride. The soft suspension actually is a plus in Eastern rocks, and the bike really does handle fantastically, for a big 4 stroke.

Me, I'm saving up for one of the new '11 KTM EXC's with a six speed transmission!

That is just dirt bike porn.

Inevitably though, Yamaha will build a backwards fuel injected WR450 enduro and I will sell the long suffering but nicely modded DRZ400 and buy one. Mainly because the WR line as proven to be very durable over the years. Husaberg/KTM not so much. The Husky 450 is the spoiler though. Definitely in the running. the Huskies are quite reliable too, so I hear through the grapevine and via my buddy's experience with his.

The DRZ400 is old and heavy, but it has proven to be utterly unbreakable. Same valves with no adjusting after initial bed in, same piston, runs better than new 8 years later of gnarly off road riding. I love it for that

KTM not reliable? Where's you hear that? My '01 520EXC has been run hard and put away wet since I bought it long ago. Never let me down.

Well, once, but that was my fault.

Valves and water pump issues is what I have heard and seen mainly with the KTMs. A buddy had a 520 SMR and about went insane with the constantly sinking valves on it. He did ride the piss out of it though as it was a motard.

Nothing earth shattering, just niggly stuff. An off road ridden 520 likely would have fewer issues. With that much power it never gets run too hard. Another friend with an EXC used to say "if it is running, it is making at least 30 horsepower!"

Sounds like normal four-stroke operation, right Cuddy?

When run hard, they'll do that. They all do.

The WRs, CRFs, and EXCs are generally not abused that way. I have many friends with KTMs. I don't recall any more problems that any other brand.
