This review confirms what I've noticed about Chinese built cycles. They seem to be built to a spec, and they try to squeeze every last dime while keeping to spec. If you mention you want plastic panels, but don't spec the kind of plastic you want, you'll get whatever is least expensive. Then, the next year, when you specify changes to fix the shortcomings, a new set appears. They seem to be a 'buyer beware' product: you get it at a good price, but know there will be some problems.

Wow Mr. Duke, NICE SAVE! A few people walked up and watched the video here in the office. Very impressive. (The laughs from the cameraman were a riot!)
Too bad we can't say the same about the bike. Maybe next year?

The bike does have some rough edges, but very few of them are unfixable. It would make an interesting project bike to find out how nicely it could be developed. |

Great write-up and legit review of an up-and-comer. Too often, motorcycle review articles seem like the authors are afraid to step on the manufacturers' toes by saying something negative. I appreciate your honesty.
As expected, the Chinese manufacturing quality is just not up to the same exacting standards as the Chinese or Germans. They will get better, I have no doubts. For now, I'll stick with a known quantity.

So it a problem of English/US design? Or of their diligence (QC)? or the Chinese building to their brief, knowing that there would be no QC supervision? Or of greed- viz. paying too little while expecting too much ? 99% of Nokia's mobile phones, and a large percentage of Panasonic/Sony TV's are built in China, as are several other high-precision products of renown brands. Maybe it's a lesson in how to outsource in these times when, as the saying goes, "If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys" I owned a Jaguar S type (Made in UK) as late as 2006, and after that unhappy experience, I would never buy an English made product again. Bottomline: Pay the same wages to Chinese workers as you would to a US or UK worker (Honda recently increased salaries of its Chinese workers by 25%) and you would get world-class quality. Without any need to fund an economy of UB-40 soccer louts.

Good question. But without talking to England's Megelli and Hsun, it's impossible to know where exactly the ball was dropped. This is one the major difficulties of outsourcing production.

Thank you. I am a journalist first, and it would be a disservice to you readers, and an abandonment of my own integrity if I did any less. |
