Recently I've owned, at the same time, a '75 BMW R60/6, a '93 BMW R100R, a 2004 BMW R1150RT, a 2000 Moto Guzzi V11 Sport, and a 2005 Harley Davidson 1200 Sportster Roadster. Of all of these bikes, my Sportster, the one with the largest motor in cc's, always got far and away the best mileage, which always cracked me up.
I ride my motorcycles a lot for work. After I got my Sportster - which I loved for its lean look compared to the "Big Twins" - I put on Rinehart (Bub) slip-ons, the correct Dyna-Jet needle, and a K&N air filter. These modifications made the bike run in a much more relaxed fashion. It warmed up more quickly, pulled away easily, and just seemed "happier". My first trip from Marietta, GA to Fort Oglethorpe, TN, I got over in the slow lane and ran her between 65 & 70. An entire tank of highway miles got me 59.7 mpg. Seriously. No exaggeration. And the mileage has remained high like that. By comparison, my RT usually got about 49 on the highway, the Guzzi got 40, and the airheads both average around 38-42. I mostly love the fact that so many of the high end custom built Bobbers look remarkably like my Pearl Black / Birch White two-toned Sportster. |

Looks good.
In fact, I may do the exact same cosmetic treatment to my Intruder, and save myself many thousands of dollars. |

Then it's affordable.
