Cool write up. Do the tuning boxes come with the bikes?
I have learned from playing with a PCIII and ignition module on my FZ1 that changing the fuel and ignition settings really does alter the feel and personality of the motor. Very cool that it is so easy to do on these dirt bikes, no $650 extra for a Power Commander and Ignition module required, no hassling main jets and needle tapers. "Laptop tuning" rocks ![]() When Yamaha makes the WR version of this new YZ, well I am just absolutely going to have to have one, end of discussion! Such a bike, with FI would rock for Colorado. Sometimes I go so high (over 12,000 feet) on the mountain trails that the bike gets sluggish and my body feels like it needs a "rejet" or perhaps an oxygen bottle. At least the bike would keep running right... Last edited by Duken4evr : 01-13-2010 at 09:33 PM. |

Fuel injection greatly enhances the ability of backyard tuners to focus an engine's powerband to suit their needs, within reason of course. A 450cc MX bike is never going to be an XR400, but it can be made to be a kinder, gentler bike than stock.
Aside from altitude, EFI a bonus for people riding the bikes in vastly different temperatures. During our test we were lucky to get a couple of Expert Class dirt racers to ride the YZF and CRF. Those guys loved the ease of tuning, since they race dirt ovals all summer and ice race all winter. In both cases, barring special offers, you'd need to buy the EFI tuners from your Honda or Yamaha dealer or an aftermarket source. I don't know when the WR will come out, but to my understanding here in Canada the Toyota/Yamaha/Machine Racing off-road team will be racing re-mapped YZF450s in 2010. |

I'd very much like to see some long term testing of these bikes. Send me a couple and I'll get on it for you.
