Hello
First off I have never rode a motorcycle before and would really love to start. I have been thinking I would want to buy a cheap older bike so I can learn and if I ever happen to lay it down no biggy. I have been looking and I found a 1982 Honda Sabre vf750 yes it is 27 years old and yes it has almost 20,000 miles on it, but it is in amazing condition and it is still a rider it also is $1250. So I was wondering if this is a good deal and price for this bike and if you think that this would be a good bike to grab up and start learning to ride. If you guys would please respond I would appreciate it. THANK YOU!!!!! Jaded |

Jaded already? You just got here...
Certainly not too old and 20k is not many miles at all. Do make sure the tires aren't ancient though, even if they look unused. Also, you're better off if the bike hasn't been sitting idle. Couldn't say if it's a good deal or not though. It is a fairly powerful bike, and not a lightweight either. That's not to say it's a terrible first bike, but something to think about. Also, I would highly recommend you take the MSF course or something before you jump on and go. Good luck! |

A well maintained VF will last 100K + miles. ejis is correct about the tires. Dry rot is not your friend. If the tires are cracked tow the bike home. BEFORE YOU BUY- Get it to a local shop and have them go over the bike since your a newbie. Any rider with integrity will meet you at a shop for the transaction. It will take about $50-70 depending on the shop rate. It will be worth it. If they give you a list of things to address and it doesn't scare you off then $1200 for a running bike with little by way of flaw is fine. Make sure that the shop hard shifts the bike from 1st to 2nd. Shaft drive bikes in that era tend to bend transmission parts. If it sticks in gear right you're set.

Tranny will blow at around 24-30K miles. Unless the gear kit has been put in.

Don't do it. There are lots of starter bikes that don't have shaft drive, water cooling and the propensity for explosions like an old Sabre.
Find a 15 year old air cooled Kawasaki in-line four cylinder. Or a Honda, Suzuki, etc. They are near indestructable, and worth every penny of the $500.00 you'll spend to purchase one. Stay away from that old impossible to work on water leaking gear shredding Honda. Trust me.
